Vanessa Maltese’s work oscillates between the second and third dimension, examining the concrete nature of sculpture in relation to the illusory space of painting. Challenging the act of seeing, Maltese’s carefully crafted geometric constructions create the illusion of three-dimensional space while simultaneously undermining their plausibility as objects in subtle ways. Investigating ideas of objecthood, Maltese’s sculptures and paintings explore colour, form and line, instigating controlled confrontations between painting and sculpture, reality and unreality.
